Edit and review subtitles in CueRefine

Open an existing subtitle file, repair its text and timing, then download the saved result. The same draft works across all four tool tabs. A matching local video is optional; CueRefine does not generate subtitles from speech.

Open your file and choose an output

Start with SRT or VTT. ASS/SSA can also import readable text and timing, with a separate loss confirmation. Files must be UTF-8, at most 2 MiB and within the 10,000-cue limit; ASS/SSA counts all event records.

  1. Open a subtitle file from any tool page. Check the filename and cue count at the top of the focused workspace.
  2. Choose SRT to VTT for VTT output, VTT to SRT for SRT output, or Plain text for TXT. These tabs share the current draft.
  3. Use the small icons beside Subtitles for repairs. Hover or focus an icon to see its name; the question-mark icon opens the Workspace guide.

Find a line and edit it

Use Go to subtitle when you know a cue number or time. Per page changes how many rows are visible; it does not remove subtitles from the file.

  1. Select Go to subtitle, choose a number or timestamp, and jump to the line.
  2. Select its text or timestamps. In the edit dialog, change Subtitle text, Start time or End time. Times use HH:MM:SS.mmm; end must be later than start.
  3. Choose Save changes, or use Ctrl/Command + Enter. Previous subtitle and Next subtitle save a valid edit before moving on. Invalid values stay open for correction.
  4. Use Undo to restore the previous saved revision. Cancel discards the pending edit; it does not delete the cue.

Review with a matching video or audio file

Media preview opens a larger player beside a continuous subtitle list. Media remains on your device and must be selected again after refresh. Playback depends on your browser supporting the file codec.

  1. Select Media preview and choose your matching local video or audio file.
  2. Play the media. The right-hand list follows the current subtitle. Select a cue number to seek, or select its text to pause and edit.
  3. Press Space to play or pause outside text fields. If you scroll away, select Back to current subtitle to resume following.
  4. Set start/end with Use playback time, or nudge the whole cue by 0.1 seconds; hold Shift for 0.5-second steps. Choose Save changes to commit, or Save & play to audition the saved cue with one second of surrounding context.

Repair more than one line

Find & replace previews literal text replacements. Shift a range moves only a consecutive group by cue number. More subtitle tools groups structural edits, text checks and timing correction.

  1. To split a long cue, select More subtitle tools → Split a subtitle. Choose the text break, use Split text at cursor, set the second cue start and review both texts before Apply changes.
  2. To merge, choose Merge adjacent subtitles. Check the next cue and any time gap: the merged text spans both cues. Different positioning settings or unsupported markup can prevent an operation.
  3. For bilingual cleanup, choose Bilingual subtitles, select which lines to keep or swap, inspect the previews and confirm the batch change. Ambiguous or mixed-script lines are skipped; this is not translation or reliable language detection.
  4. Use Review issues to visit affected cues. Reading-length hints guide review; malformed source blocks and invalid timing can block export.

Choose the right timing correction

Shift timing moves every cue by one fixed amount. Shift a range changes one section. More subtitle tools → Two-point synchronization scales the timeline between two matched subtitle/video moments and extrapolates outside them.

  1. Measure a clear line near the beginning, middle and end. Choose Earlier when subtitles appear late; choose Later when they appear too soon.
  2. For a constant offset, enter the amount in seconds and compare Saved with After shift. Apply shift once to commit it.
  3. For gradual drift, use two widely separated matched moments in Two-point synchronization. Check its preview before applying; cue durations change as well as start times. It does not automatically detect speech or repair different scene cuts.

Download the result you actually want

Saved on this device means a browser draft, not a downloaded file or cloud backup. Export summary describes saved changes relative to the original.

  1. Finish any open cue edit. Apply a timing preview if you want it included in the download.
  2. In video review, choose Back to tools. On a narrow screen, open Settings & export. Check the output format and filename.
  3. Use the main Download button to export the saved result. Review format-loss warnings before confirming. Unapplied timing previews are excluded.
  4. Download original returns the untouched imported file, without your edits. Keep it separately and check the edited export near the beginning, middle and end in your destination player.
